The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) on the 15th of December, Wednesday, accorded the heritage status to Kolkata’s Durga Puja festival.

Taking to micro blogging site Twitter, the UNESCO announced Durga Puja in the heritage list. The tweet read, ”Durga puja in Kolkata has just been inscribed on the intangible heritage list. Congratulations India.”

Ms. Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister of West Bengal and Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded the move.

Ms. Mamata Banerjee said, ”Proud moment for Bengal! To every #Bengali across the world, Durga Puja is much more than a festival, it is an emotion that unites everyone. And now, #DurgaPuja has been added to the Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. We are all beaming with joy!”

The Ministry of Culture also extended wishes to the residents of West Bengal and said, “Overjoyed that ‘Durga Puja in Kolkata’ joins the @UNESCO Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Many congratulations! It is a confluence of the rich heritage and culture of the county’s art, crafts, rituals and practices. Jai Maa Durga!”

With the inclusion of Durga Puja, the number of elements in the list of Intangible Cultural Heritage from India has increased to 14.

The latest inclusion in the list prior to the Durga Puja is the Kumbh Mela, the largest peaceful congregation of pilgrims on earth, which was inscribed in 2017.
