The former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Spokesperson Ms. Nupur Sharma and her family have been provided police security amid repeated threats.

The security came days after the Delhi Police registered a case against unknown persons for allegedly sending death and rape threats to Ms. Nupur Sharma, for her controversial Mohammed Prophet remark, during a debate.  On the 27th of May, Ms. Nupur Sharma filed a complaint with the Cyber Cell unit of the Delhi Police alleging she was receiving death threats and there was “targeted hatred” towards her.  After the complaint, the Police’s Special Cell under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections 506 (criminal intimidation,) 507 (criminal intimidation by an anonymous communication) and 509 (insulting modesty of a woman.)  

The Delhi Police said, “After examining the said complaint, IPC section 153A (promoting enmity between different groups) was added to the case.  We have sent notices to Twitter and are waiting for their response.”

Meanwhile, Ms. Nupur Sharma’s remark has created a rage amongst people worldwide. At least 15 Gulf countries and Islamic nations condemned the remark and protested against India.  Furthermore, in India groups and communities clashed, resulting in violence and stone pelting incidents in Uttar Pradesh.
