Arvind Kejriwal, the Chief Minister of Delhi, on the 17th of December, passed a resolution against the three farm laws.

Extending support to thousands of farmers of Haryana and Punjab, the President of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) passed a resolution in the Delhi Assembly.

The passed resolution was against the Centre’s three new agriculture laws.

The Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal tore the copies of the farm laws, saying he cannot betray the farmers of the country.

Addressing the Delhi Assembly, Arvind Kejriwal said, “I am pained that I have to do this. I did not intend to, but I cannot betray the farmers of my country who have been sleeping on the streets in the cold… when the temperature is just 2 degrees Celsius.”

Mr. Kejriwal further said, “I am a citizen of this country first, a chief minister later. This assembly rejects the three laws and appeals to the Central Government to meet the demands of the farmers.”

During the Assembly, the AAP President highlighted the suffering of farmers and said nearly 20 protesting farmers died so far.

The farmer’s protests are continuing in Delhi since the 25th of November and entered the 23rd day of their agitation.

Criticising the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) rule Central Government, the AAP leader said the GoI is having an impression that the farmers camping at the protest sites would simply return to their homes.

Mr. Kejriwal highlighted one such protest against the British Government in 1907.

The 1907 protest continued for 9 months with a demand to repeal the Colonisation Bill, introduced in pre independence era (1906.) According to the Colonisation Bill, the land of any individual would be transferred to the Government after death if they have no heirs.

Lala Lajpat Rai, a reformer and freedom fighter led the agitation and continued for long 9 months.

The protest ended after the British Government repealed the laws and accepted the demands of the protestors.

Similarly, the farmers of Haryana and Punjab are protesting and would not step back until the GoI scrap the newly introduced farm laws.

The Central Government introduced the three farm bills are, the Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Bill 2020, the Farmers Agreement of Price Assurance and Farm Services Bill 2020 (Empowerment and Protection) and the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Bill 2020, were cleared by the President of India.

According to the passed bills, the Minimum Support Price (MSP,) area of trading would be under the purview of the Indian Government.

The reason behind the farmers protest is their fear of being at the mercy of corporates or zamindars for crop prices. The new bills would also demolish the Minimum Support Price (MSP) advantages for farmers.
