Customer Drags Bank To Court After Cheque In Kannada Rejected!

On Wednesday, a customer of the ICICI bank in Karnataka dragged the Bank to court after his cheque was dishonored because the details were written in Kannada, the local language of Karnataka. The customer Anand Diwakar Garag filed a case claiming of being denied services in the district consumer redressal court of Belagavi.

For the payment of his Life Insurance Corporation Premium Garag presented a cheque of Rs. 17,220 in November. When the LIC handed this over to the Corporation bank which handles all the accounts it was forwarded to ICICI, who returned it with a note attached ‘Presented with document’. Before approaching the court, Garag sought clarification from both ICICI Bank and LIC questioning why the cheque was rejected. When neither of the organizations gave any proper response he filed a case on the same.

Speaking to TOI, Garag said, “My bank told me that the reason they dishonored my cheque was because the details were filled in Kannada. Also, in another incident that occurred after this one, ICICI bank dishonored a cheque I had given to a private firm.”

In regard to this, the consumer redressal court issued notices to LIC, ICICI and also Corporation Banks regarding the case. February 28^th has been given by the court for hearing where the consumer and all three organizations representatives must be present.
