On the 22nd of December, the Union Health Ministry confirmed 19,556 new cases of the Novel Coronavirus or COVID-19.

This is the first time India reported below 20,000 single day cases since June.

According to the updated data on the official website of the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW,) India recorded 19,556 new cases, 301 deaths and 30,376 recoveries in the past 24 hours.

With these updates, India reported 10,075,116 positive cases, of which 96,36,487 are recovered/discharge cases, 2,92,518 active cases and 1,46,111 deceased cases

The highest number of active COVID-19 cases are from Maharashtra (60,593,) followed by Kerala (60,522,) West Bengal (16, 903,) Uttar Pradesh (16,822,) Chattisgarh (16,060) and Karnataka (14,001.)

Meanwhile, in the past 24 hours, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) conducted 10,72,228 sample tests for COVID-19, taking the cumulative total to 16,31,70,557.

The recovery rate of India is better than other nations with 95.65 % and fatality rate at 1.45% and active caseload percentage is 2.90 %.

In addition, concerned about the new strain of COVID-19 infection, which was found in the United Kingdom, India took immediate measures.

In regard to the new deadly strain is 70 % more dangerous than existing mutant of COVID-19, India suspended all the flights to and from U.K., in effect from the 22nd of December.

Other measures like night curfews in several states, ban on outdoor New Year’s and Christmas celebrations have also been imposed in some states.

Meanwhile, worried about the new COVID-19 strain, the Union Government urged people of India to be cautious and follow all the guidelines of COVID-19, including social distance, face masks and using sanitizers.
