The Budget Session of Parliament kick started on the 29th of January with the speech of the President of India Ram Nath Kovind. 

Mr. Kovind addressed the joint session and said the Central Government would be vigilant and committed towards nation’s security.

President Kovind praised the ruling Government for development and growth and a transformed nation in the six years.

President Kovind said the Parliament session is important as India entered the 75th year of its independence.

President Kovind said that the government is committed towards farmers welfare and said the three farm laws would help the farmers.

He highlighted various steps taken by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi Government for welfare of underprivileged, farmers and rural population.

Addressing the media outside Parliament, PM Narendra Modi said that the day marks the commencement of the first Session of this decade, the 2021.

He said that this decade is very important for the bright future of India.

The PM added that a golden opportunity has come before the nation to fulfil the dreams seen by the freedom fighters.

Mr. Modi said, “This decade should be fully utilised. Keeping this in mind, there should be discussions in this session focussing on the decade – this is expected by the nation. I believe that we will not lag behind in making our contribution for the fulfilment of people’s aspiration.”

The Parliament Session started from the 29th of January, the first one after the pandemic illness, the Novel Coronavirus.

As per tradition, the President addresses the joint sitting of Parliament at the beginning of the Budget Session every year.

Meanwhile, the leader of opposition parties including Ghulam Nabi Azad and 16 others boycotted the President’s speech.

The decision came after the recent 26th January’s tractor rally violence.

The leaders also demanded an independent probe into the Centre’s role in the violence..

The Budget session is being held in two parts this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The first part of the Budget Session is scheduled to conclude on the 15th of February.

The second part would commence on the 8th of March and would end on the 8th of April.

In the wake of the Novel Coronavirus or COVID-19 outbreak, Parliament would sit in two shifts.

Morning session is dedicated to Rajya Sabha while Lok Sabha will sit in the evening.

The operating hours for Rajya Sabha would be from 9:00 A.M., to 2:00 P.M.

On the other hand, Lok Sabha would function from 4:00 P.M., to 8:00 P.M.
