Mr. Asaduddin Owaisi, the President of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) slammed Mr. Yogi Adityanath, the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, over his remark on population.

On the 12th of July, Tuesday, Mr. Yogi Adityanath made a ‘population imbalance remark’ and said, “It should not happen that the speed of population growth or the percentage of some community is high and we stabilize the population of the `moolniwasi’ (natives) through awareness or enforcement.  This is a matter of concern for every country where there is a situation of population imbalance.”

The remark drew a lot of criticism from the opposition leaders, who called the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister biased towards Muslims.

Reacting to the comment of Mr. Yogi Adityanath over population control, Mr. Asaduddin Owaisi said, “Muslims were the ones using most contraceptives.”  He further added, “Their health minister said that no law is needed in the country for population control.  It’s Muslims who’re using most contraceptives.  The total fertility rate which was 2.6 in 2016 is now 2.3. Country’s demographic dividend is best among all countries.”

The AIMIM chief also took a dig at the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister over remarking Muslims as an outsider and not a native of India.  Mr, Asaduddin Owaisi said, “Are Muslims not natives of India? If we see the reality, natives are only tribals & Dravidian people. In UP, without any law, desired fertility rate would be achieved by 2026-2030.”

Besides Mr. Asaduddin Owaisi, the Samajwadi Party (SP) Chief Mr. Akhilesh Yadav also lashed out at Mr. Yogi Adityanath over the comment,

Mr. Akhilesh Yadav took to Twitter to say, “Anarchy does not arise from the population, but the destruction of democratic values.”

Notably, the Uttar Pradesh law commission had earlier submitted a draft Uttar Pradesh Population (Control, Stabilization, and Welfare) Bill, 2021 to the State Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Government in the last few months of Adityanath’s previous term in office.

Notably, Uttar Pradesh has a population of 22 crores and is likely to cross over 25 crores by end of 2023.
