A day after an attack on his convoy in Uttar Pradesh, All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi, speaking in Parliament, rejected Z-category security, asserting that he does not fear death.

In his address in Parliament, a furious Owaisi said, “I don’t fear death. I don’t want Z category security, I reject it; make me an ‘A’ category citizen.” The Hyderabad MP was provided Z security by the Ministry of Home Affairs following an attack on him on Thursday.

The All India Majlis e Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) President Mr. Asaduddin Owaisi was given Z security on the 4th of February.

The Government of India (GoI) decided to provide Mr. Asaduddin Owaisi with Z category security by the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).  The decision was taken after reviewing the threat level in the light of the recent attack.

Notably, on the 3rd of February, Thursday, while returning to Delhi from Meerut, some unidentified people shot at his vehicle. The bullet firing incident reported ahead of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections created a political ruckus and blame game.  Mr. Asaduddin Owaisi was in Meerut to campaign for the upcoming Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.  After the incident he took to Twitter and said, “Three to four rounds of bullets were fired upon my vehicle near Chhajarsi toll plaza when I was returning from an election-related event in Kithaur, Meerut.  The incident was a well-planned conspiracy, but I escaped without injuries.”  He further said, “We heard a huge bang.  One was firing from a 90-degree angle and another was right opposite my door.  Behind my car were my party members accompanying me in another car.  They hit one of the shooters.”

Mr. Owaisi also asked the Election Commission (EC) to take strict action.  He said, “I want to tell the EC that there is definitely some mastermind behind this attack.  A few days ago, at a Dharam Sansad in Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh, there was talk of taking my life.  This is on record, it should be seen.”

Meanwhile, the Uttar Pradesh Police has arrested two people in the matter.

One of the accused is Sachin, a resident of Noida who has an earlier attempt to murder case against him.  While he has claimed that he holds a law degree, police are verifying it.

In addition, Sachin’s Facebook profile says he is a member of a Hindu right wing organisation, police said, adding that they are investigating the claim.  The other accused is Shubham, a farmer from Saharanpur who does not have a criminal record.  According to police, the two have told them during questioning that they were upset with remarks made by Mr Owaisi and his brother and MLA Akbaruddin Owaisi.

Police have recovered country made pistols from them which they had recently purchased.

Police are now looking for the people who sold the firearms and investigating the matter further.

Meanwhile, the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections are scheduled in 7 phases, starting from the 7th of February till the 7th of March.

The results of the elections are scheduled to be released on the 10th of March.
