Union Home Minister Amit Shah, on the 9th of May, lashed out at Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister of West Bengal for not allowing Shramik Express, special trains for migrant workers.

Mr. Shah wrote a letter to Mamata Banerjee and said, “While the Union Government plans to help more than two lakh migrants to return home, it is the West Bengal Government that is not supporting their cause and is not allowing trains carrying migrants to reach the state.”

Lakhs of migrant workers are stranded in different parts of India and are awaiting approval of the West Bengal Government to reach back home.   However, Ms. Banerjee is not accepting the proposal of the sender state and allowing the Shramik Express trains into West Bengal.

Amit Shah said,  “This is injustice with West Bengal migrant labourers.  This will create further hardship for them.”   He further said, “Migrants from West Bengal are also eager to reach home.  The Central Government  is facilitating but we are not getting expected support from West Bengal.”

Though the Indian Government approved Shramik Express, the running of these trains depend on mutual consent of the receiver and sender states.

So far, Indian states like Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Kerala Telangana, Bihar, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra  ran 251 trains and transported nearly 3 lakh migrants.
