Ajmer Blast Case Judgement Pronounced

On Wednesday, a special National Investigation Agency (NIA) of Jaipur pronounced life imprisonment to two of the convicts in the Ajmer Dargah Bomb blast case of 2007. The accused Devendra Gupta and Bhavesh Patel were given life imprisonment while addressing the quantum of a sentence of the case.

The court on March 8 convicted Bhavesh Patel, Sunil Joshi, and Devendra Gupta. It also acquitted Swami Aseemanand. However, Joshi died mysteriously soon after the bombing. The conviction were made under Sections 120 (B) (criminal conspiracy,) 295-A (deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs) of IPC, 3 /4 of Explosive Substances Act and Sections 16 and 18 of Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA.)

The incident took place on October 11 in 2007 at the Dargah of Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti during Roza. The blast ahead of fast left three pilgrims dead and fifteen injured. This case was then handed over to the Rajasthan’s Anti Terrorism Squad (ATS) and was then transferred to the National Investigation Agency. They registered the case again with the NIA police station at New Delhi on April 6, 2011.

The case had 149 witnesses for the case and almost 451 documents were registered. The NIA then filed 3 supplementary charge sheets in the case.
