On the 9th of December, Thursday, the farmers, protesting against the Central Government, announced to suspend agitation.

Started on the 26th of November, 2020, the year long protest was suspended amid assurance from the Central Government.  In a letter, issued to the thousands of protesting farmers and Farmer Union leaders, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) assured the Minimum Support Price (MSP) to the farmers.

It is to be noted, the protest which started against the three farm laws, continued even after the Center withdrew the laws.  After the Three Farm Laws withdrawal, the farmers continued their agitation at the Delhi border demanding MSP and withdrawal of cases registered against farmers in the past one year.  Responding to the same, the Government in the letter said, they would form a MSP committee in regarding the same and withdrawal of cases with immediate effect.

Farmers’ Union leader Gurnam Singh Charuni addressed the media and said, “We will hold a review meeting on January 15. If the government does not fulfill its promises, we could resume our agitation.”

The farmers announced their intention to vacate the protest site on the 11th of December.  However, a final decision will be taken by the Sanyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM.)

On the other hand, the farmers will also meet the Central Government representative over the matter, on the 15th of January 2022.
