On the 21st of February, Monday, a special court of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) sentenced Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) President Mr. Lalu Prasad Yadav to five years’ imprisonment.

The Ranchi CBI Court also imposed a fine of Rs. 60 lakh on him in the Rs.139.35 crore fodder scam case.

It is to be noted, on the 15th of February, Mr. Lalu Prasad Yadav, the former Chief Minister of Bihar, was convicted in a fodder scam case. Mr. Lalu Prasad Yadav, who has already been sentenced 14 years in Jail for other four multi crore rupees scams, has now been sentenced for the fifth, the Dandora Scam Case.

From 1992 to 1993, during the reign of the RJD Government, the then Chief Minister of Bihar Mr. Lalu Prasad Yadav, withdrew Rs. 33.67 crores from the Chaibasa treasury. In December 2017, Mr. Yadav was sentenced to an imprisonment of 7 years after being convicted in the fodder scam for offences under Section 120B, Section 420, 467, 468, 471, 477(A) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Section 13(i)(c)(d) of the Prevention of Corruption.

According to sources, Lalu Prasad Yadav was convicted in four different fodder scams worth over Rs. 950 crores. The Dandora scam of Rs 139.35 crore, was his fifth fodder scam during his reign.

Last month, the Special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Court Judge Mr. S.K. Shashi completed the hearing against 99 accused including Mr. Lalu Prasad Yadav. The CBI Court reviewed the final hearing against the RJD supremo on the 14th of February and reserved the verdict for today, the 15th of February.

According to sources, of the original 170 accused in the case, 55 have died, 7 have become government witnesses, 2 have accepted the charges against them and 6 are absconding.

Some of the main accused in the fodder scam case include, former Member of Parliament (MP) Mr. Jagdish Sharma, the then Public Accounts Committee (PAC) Chairman Mr. Dhruv Bhagat, the then Animal Husbandry Secretary Mr. Beck Julius and Animal Husbandry Assistant Director Dr. K.M. Prasad.

Mr. Lalu Prasad Yadav has challenged all the four charges and is likely to challenge this one too.
