Hyderabad: Students struggled with police on Tuesday morning outside Union minister Bandaru Dattatreya’s residence in Hyderabad as protests erupted for the second day over the suicide of Dalit research scholar Rohit Vemula, after the incident which has triggered outrage across the country.
Rahul Gandhi, Congress vice-president landed in Hyderabad on today morning to express solidarity with Dalit students. The visit by Gandhi, who will be accompanied by senior party leader Digvijaya Singh, is seen as an attempt by the Congress to mount pressure on the BJP-led NDA government over the incident.

Anger and tension continued to grip the varsity a day after hundreds of students clashed with security personnel over the death of Rohith while authorities clamped prohibitory orders. The issue resonated in Delhi too where police fired water cannons at several groups demonstrating outside the human resource development ministry’s office.
MIM chief and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi said Dalit students were subjected to the worst kind of treatment and alleged that the BJP-led government was trying to turn the campuses into ABVP dens.
