London: London get its first Muslim mayor in Labour Party’s Sadiq Khan. Its the first time that 45-year-old Muslim has been elected as a mayor, marking a political milestone in the Western world. Khan beat Conservative Zac Goldsmith by winning 57 percent of the votes, halting the the party’s eight-year rule in the city.
“This election was not without controversy and I am so proud that London has today chosen hope over fear and unity over division,” Khan said after his win, according to London media, while hinting at Goldsmith’s attempt to link him to Muslim extremism during the campaigning.
The victory followed the Muslim mayor who is son of a bus driver faced an unusual bitter campaign against Conservative candidate Zac Goldsmith, the son of a billionaire, in which race and religion have proven ugly flash points.
“Can’t wait to work with you to create a London that is fair for all!,” the new mayor added.
