Constantine II, the last king of Greece, passed away on the 10th of January, Tuesday, at the age of 82 years old.

According to sources, King Constantine II was in an intensive care unit in a private hospital in Athens, and took breath on late Tuesday, the 10th of January.  The news of the king’s demise was published in the Associated Press reports, after the Hygeia Hospital hospital staff confirmed the demise.

Constantine II ascended to the throne in 1964 during a turbulent period in Greek history that culminated in a military coup three years later.  He was soon forced to flee abroad, following an unsuccessful counter coup with military forces.  Later, in 1973 monarchy of King Constantine II was abolished by military junta, which ruled the nation till 1974.

King Constantine II was later stripped of his Greek citizenship too and settled in London.  Recently, a few years back, King Constantine II, who married to Princess Anne Marie of Denmark, came to Greece over some property dispute.  In 2002, King Constantine II and other family members received compensation for their former property in the country.

Meanwhile, King Constantine II is survived by his wife Princess Anne Marie, five children Alexia, Pavlos, Nikolaos, Theodora and Philippos and nine grandchildren.
