A helicopter, a Eurocopter 225, carrying as many as 14 people crashed on Friday near the western city of Bergen, according to Norwegian police. Morten Kronen, the spokesman of police said that the copter was totally smashed.

Mr. Kronen said that there were reports of an explosion, thick smoke and there were people in the sea. He added the crash took place on the island of Turoey, near Bergen. The spokesperson did not explain why people had ended up in the water.

The eye witnesses said that the helicopter’s rotor blades were rushed towards them and they heard a violent explosion. It is heard that the helicopter was on its way to an offshore oil field in the North Sea, some 120 kilometers (74 miles) northwest of Bergen. More details are awaited.
