On Saturday, the FBI has released never seen before pictures of the Pentagon’s 9/11 aftermath. The Pentagon serves as headquarters of the US Defense Department and is located in Virginia. In the Vault section of their official website, the agency posted 27 pictures which are of historic value and public importance.

On September 9, 2001, a group of terrorists that belonged to al-Qaeda hijacked four American airliners and crashed them into the Twin Towers of New York and the Pentagon. While two planes were flown into the World Trade Center twin towers, another was used to target the Pentagon. Nearly 3,000 people were killed in the twin attacks. The fourth plane crashed into the fields of Pennsylvania while flying towards Washington when the passengers overpowered the hijackers.

The images give a glimpse of the aftermath of the attack on the Pentagon, the attempts to control the flames and the following clean up.
