The Power Minister Piyush Goyal said there is no possibility of an increase in power tariff in the country after the GST roll out. He also said industry associations have not considered postponement.

The Goods and Services Tax (GST,) will rollout on July 1, it will introduce a new system in the country where there will be one set of a single tax on all similar commodities and services across the country.

Goyal told reporters after meeting with the industry covering power, coal, mines and renewable energy sectors “I don’t see any possibility of a spike in power tariff due to the implementation of GST. There could be one or two paisa variation (per unit of electricity).”

Goyal also said there were a couple of issues which will be put forward at the next meeting of the GST Council

The power ministry will prepare an analysis based on tax collection before and after implementation of GST to figure out if the new tax rates are “inordinately” high or not.
