Facebook, on the 13th of April, blocked the account of Rafael Correa, the former President of Ecuador. According to representatives of Facebook, this move was made because of the kind of content the former Ecuador President shared.
According to a spokesperson from Facebook, sharing private information like numbers and bank details on the social media platform is prohibited as it may compromise the identity of the people on the platform.
This move comes after there were reports of Correa using this platform to post information online about a bank account, which was allegedly used by his brother and the current Ecuador President, Lenin Moreno. However, while this is the reason being quoted by Moreno, the current stance between the two is, Correa is currently Moreno’s nemesis and has no direct links with the said offshore account.
“They blocked my Facebook page, 1.5 million followers. One more step of the brutal persecution, and another show of despair for case INA papers, of which the corrupt [Lenin] Moreno will not be able to escape. Only in this way will I announce a new page. Do not believe in “fakes,”” Correa said while confirming the news.
Incidentally, this block also comes a day after Correa said Moreno was the “biggest traitor in Ecuadorian history” for giving asylum to WikiLeaks founder, Julian Assange, who was arrested on the 12th of April, in Ecuador.
“It’s incredible. We cannot imagine something like this. It’s against international law; it’s against the institution of asylum; it’s against the Ecuadorian constitution, especially because since last year, Julian Assange has had Ecuadorian citizenship. It is the biggest betrayal perhaps in Latin American history,” said Correa while attacking Moreno.
While there is no direct connection between Moreno and Facebook blocking Correa’s account, the timing seems a little odd.
