A student of the Indian Institute of Technology Madras, was beaten up allegedly by right wing students for participating in a beef fest. A day after the incident, the premier institute is set to witness a series of protests.

On Tuesday afternoon, a Ph.D. scholar, Sooraj from the Department of Aerospace in IIT Madras was cruelly attacked by eight students belonging to right wing groups. He had undergone serious injuries in his right eye and was admitted to the Sankara Nethralaya Eye Hospital, Nungambakkam.

The Police of Chennai have booked the 8 students of the IIT Madras for attacking the Ph.D. scholar Sooraj. A FIR has also been registered under the four sections. Manish Kumar Singh and the seven others have been booked under the Sections 147 (rioting,) 341 (wrongful restraint,) 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) and 506(1) (criminal intimidation.)

Sooraj also has been booked under the sections 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons,) and 341 (wrongful restraint,) based on Manish’s complaint. Manish had alleged that Suraj have assaulted him and his hand was hurt in the attack.

On Monday, the Madras High Court had stayed the new notifications for four weeks while observing that it is an individual’s right to choose his or her own food. The Madurai bench of the Madras High

Court has also sought a response from the State and the Central Governments on the matter in four weeks’ time while hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by a Madurai based lawyer and activist.
