The By Polls results showed the BJP lose the Kairana seat in Uttar Pradesh which was one of the most watched seats in this election. The BJP won this seat in 2014 and held onto it until the Congress and the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) joined together to win this by poll.

Tabassum Hasan the RLD candidate beat the BJP rival Mriganka Singh. A former lawmaker Ms. Hasan was supported by the Congress and the Samajwadi Party (SP.) Further into the election, the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) headed by Mayawati also supported the RLD candidate.

The opposition parties are uniting together to dethrone the ruling BJP party. The SP and BSP joined together to defeat the ruling party in Gorakhpur and Phulpur in March.

The opposition parties hope to unify and defeat the BJP in upcoming State Elections and 2019 General Elections.

The Kairana seat was up for grabs after the death of the BJP Parliamentarian Hukum Singh in February. During the voting, there were a number of complaints about the Electronic Voting Machines and the Voter Verified Paper Audit Trail.

Repolling was held at 73 polling stations including the polling for the Kairana seat.
