Tollywood actor Mr. Siddharth’s Twitter remark issue intensified into a legal battle after the Hyderabad police registered a case.

On the 12th of January, the Cybercrime Wing of the Hyderabad police registered a case after a woman lodged a complaint against the actor.  The first information report (FIR) has been registered under Section 509 (word, gesture, or act intended to insult the modesty of women) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Section 67 of the Information Technology Act.  Mr. K.V.M. Prasad, the Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP,) Cyber Crime Wing, Detective Department, Hyderabad said, ” A woman named Prerna approached Cyber Crime Wing and lodged a complaint against actor Siddharth for his sexist remarks against shuttler Saina Nehwal on Twitter.”

The case was registered in regard to the recent tweet of Mr. Siddharth against the Indian Shuttler Ms. Saina Nehwal.  Recently, on the 10th of January, Tollywood actor Mr. Siddharth, reacted to a tweet, posted by Ms. Saina Nehwal, who expressed concern over the safety of Mr. Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister of India.

After the recent security breach issue during PM Modi’s Punjab visit, Ms. Saina Nehwal said, “No Nation can claim itself to be safe if the security of its own PM gets compromised.  I condemn, in the strongest words possible, the cowardly attack on PM Modi by anarchists (sic.)”

Taking a dig at the badminton player, actor Siddharth, who has always been disappointed with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) said,  “Subtle cock champion of the world… Thank God we have protectors of India. Shame on you #Rihanna.”  Siddharth was attempting to disrespect Saina in a sexist manner by distorting the badminton term ‘shuttlecock.’  The Twitter reaction gained a lot of criticism from netizens, saying it is not a good way to react.

However, soon after the criticism, Siddharth apologized to Saina Nehwal.  Mr. Siddharth, on the 12th of January, took to social media platforms, Twitter and Instagram, and apologized to Ms. Saina Nehwal.

In an open letter apology, the actor said, Dear Saina, I want to apologize to you for the rude joke that I wrote as a response to a tweet of yours, a few days ago.  I may disagree with you on many things but even my disappointment or anger when I read your tweet, cannot justify my tone and words.  I know I have more grace in me than that.”

Despite an apology, a case has been registered against the Tollywood actor and an investigation is underway.
