The new cases of the Wuhan virus, Omicron is rising rapidly in Telangana.  In the past 24 hours, the Hyderabad Airport Authority reported four new cases of Omicron.

On the 16th of December, Thursday, the Telangana Health Department reported four more cases of the Omicron variant. This has taken total cases in the State to seven so far. Of these seven Omicron cases, one family whose seven-year-old boy was found to be infected by the Omicron variant, had left for Kolkata taking a connecting flight from the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport on the 12th of December.  The remaining six cases are being treated in Hyderabad’s state run hospital, under the supervision of the State Health department officials and doctors.

Dr. G. Srinivasa Rao, the Director of Telangana Public Health, said, of the four new Omicron cases, three are from Kenya and one is an Indian.  He further said, concerned with the Omicron threat, the State Health Department and airport authority started strict screening and random sample tests for COVID-19.  Samples of 2% of the total people arriving from non risk countries were taken for random RT-PCR test, if positive their samples are being sent for Genome Sequencing, to find if they are Omicron positive.

In addition, the State Government imposed curbs in Tolichowki area of Hyderabad, where the first case of Omicron was reported on the 13th of December.  Over 600 samples of people residing in Tolichowki have been sent for COVID-19 tests.

Meanwhile, from the 1st of December to the 16th of December, a total of 6,674 people arrived in Hyderabad, from various places including foreign “non risk” and “at risk” countries.
