Dr. G. Srinivasa Rao, the Director of Public Health of Telangana, on the 17th of December, Friday, conducted a press conference, to update about Omicron, the new variant of the Wuhan virus.

According to the sources, Mr. G. Srinivasa Rao said, “Our surveillance system is robust. Health workers are doing a good job. That is why we are able to report these cases regularly. Omicron has spread to 90 countries.” He said the situation of Omicron in Telangana is under control and asked people to be cautious and follow COVID-19 guidelines.

Dr. G. Srinivasa Rao said, “The state government is all ready to deal with a new possible wave.” He said, “This variant need not be seen separately. It is part of the COVID-19 spread. More than 95 percent of people affected with Omicron have no symptoms. Only one or two patients are getting hospitalized according to reports. Except in the UK, deaths haven’t been reported due to this strain. Only 1 death even from that country. But that doesn’t mean that we become complacent. There is no clear information on how this variant will act in older people and is immunocompromised. So it is important people take precautions that include masking, washing hands and vaccination.”

However, the Health Director asked people not to worry and continue with their regular activities. He also dismissed the rumours of lockdown. He said, “Rumours of lockdown are being spread on social media. People need not panic because we will keep informing people about developments.” He also clarified the false information that vaccination does not work on this new variant and said, ” Not taking the vaccine is also a reason for the spread of this new variant.” Reportedly, of the total 9 Omicron, only two are vaccinated, the remaining cases are either unvaccinated or partially vaccinated.

According to the data revealed by G. Srinivasa Rao, Telangana’s Omicron tally has increased to 9, of which 3 passengers are from Kenya, 1 from Abu Dhabi, UAE, 2 from Dubai, 1 from Sudan, 1 from the United Kingdom (U.K.,) 1 from the Czech Republic and 1 travelled to West Bengal from Hyderabad.
