Sonia Gandhi, the interim President of the Indian National Congress (INC) wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding orphaned children due to the Wuhan virus pande. pandemic.  In the letter dated, 20th of May, Ms. Sonia Gandhi urged the Central Government to provide financial assistance and free education for children, who lost their parents and orphaned due to the pande. pandemic.

Ms. Sonia Gandhi said, “Amidst the devastation caused by the pandemic and the heart-wrenching tragedies being faced by affected families, news of young children losing one or both parents to COVID-19 are the most poignant.  These children are left with the trauma of loss and no support towards a stable education or future,”  She urged the education to be provided for free at Navodaya Vidyalayas across the Country, which was also a creation and legacy of Rajiv Gandhi, the former Prime Minister of India.   Ms. Gandhi recalled the same and said, “As you are aware, one of my husband Rajiv Gandhi’s most significant legacies is the network of Navodaya Vidyalayas. It was his dream to make high-quality modem education accessible and affordable to talented youth, predominantly from rural areas. There are now, as you know, 661 such schools across the country.”

Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also tweeted, “Children are amongst the worst hit by Covid trauma, many having lost their parents to the dreadful situation. Congress President makes an important suggestion to safeguard their future & provide them free education at NVs. It’s high time GOI listened!”

Meanwhile, it is to be noted, so far approximately 2 lakh people lost lives due to the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic in India.
