The Serum Institute of India (SII) on the 18th of May, said it had never exported vaccines to other countries at the cost of the people of India.

The statement from the Covisheild manufacturer SII, came at a time, when the citizens of India and the opposition questioned the export of India made vaccines to abroad.

Responding to the same, the SII said, “In January 2021, we had a large stockpile of vaccine doses. Our vaccination drive had started successfully and the number of daily cases being recorded were at an all-time low.” It further added, “We would like to reiterate that we have never exported vaccines at the cost of the people in India and remain committed to do everything we can in the support of the vaccination drive in the country (sic.) ”

Speaking of the commitment toward global initiative COVAX, for exporting vaccines, the SII in its statement said, “We will not be safe till everyone globally is able to defeat this virus at a global scale. Further, as part of our global alliances, we also had commitments to COVAX, so that they could distribute the vaccines globally to end the pandemic.”

The SII also highlighted the reason behind the shortage of vaccine Covisheild and said, India is the second most populated nation, due to which vaccination for all in 2 to 3 months is next to impossible. They said, the vaccination drive for such a large population cannot be completed within 2-3 months and production of such a huge number of doses for 133 crore people is a big challenge for the pharma company.

The SII has been working with the Central Government tirelessly to do its best for the people. In addition, according to the SII statement, they are likely to increase the production scale soon.

Meanwhile, in India so far 19 crore people have been given the vaccination doses against the deadly Wuhan virus.
