On the 13th of December, Monday, Pakistan reported its first case of Omicron, the new variant of the Wuhan virus (COVID-19.)

According to the Pakistani local media, a 57 years old woman, a resident of Karachi is detected Omicron positive. The National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC,) took to Twitter and posted a tweet, “The National Institute of Health, Islamabad has been able to confirm that a recently suspected sample from Karachi is indeed the ‘Omicron variant’ of Sars-CoV2.” The post further said, “This is the first confirmed case but continued surveillance of identified samples is in place to identify trends.”

The case was suspected last week at Aga Khan University Hospital (AKUH) in Islamabad through gene sequencing. The hospital authority released a statement and said, besides the 57 year old woman, no other patient at the hospital tested positive for the new dangerous variant. The hospital also confirmed the health condition of the Omicron positive patient to be stable and asked her to receive COVID-19 doses as she was unvaccinated.

On the other hand, The NCOC also urged people to get their vaccine doses against the Novel Coronavirus.
