Amid the rising cases of Omicron, the new variant of the Wuhan virus (Novel Coronavirus,) the Mumbai police imposed Section 144, for the weekend.

On the evening of the 10th of December, the Mumbai police imposed section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) restricting gathering of more than 4 people (rallies, events or any public gathering) at any public place in Mumbai commissionerate limits.

The Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations) issued the notice, which will be in force for the next 48 hours.  The issued notification read, “It has been issued to prevent danger to human life from the new Omicron variant of COVID-19 as well as a threat to the law and order situation against the backdrop of violence that took place in Amravati, Malegaon and Nanded.”  The Mumbai police warned the public of strict actions, if anyone is found violating the law and order.  They will be punished under section 188 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and other legal provisions. 

Meanwhile, in the past few days, Maharashtra reported 7 new cases of the Omicron variant, taking the rally to 17.  The cases of Omicron are likely to rise as a total of 61,439 international travelers have arrived in Maharashtra, from Pune, Mumbai and Nagpur airports after the 1st of December.  Of the total, 9,678 were from ‘at-risk’ countries for Omicron. 

However, the Maharashtra Minister urged the people not to panic and follow all the COVID-19 appropriate guidelines.
