Till the 19th of October, India administered 98.67 crore vaccine doses against the deadly Wuhan virus, also known as the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19.)

According to the Union Health Ministry data, of the total 98.67 crore vaccinated people, 71 % are those who received their first doses, the remaining 29 % of the people are fully vaccinated with two doses. In India, the nationwide vaccination drive against the COVID-19 started on the 16th of January 2021. In just 10 months, India administered vaccine doses to 98.67 crore people, which is 21 % of the total population. By the end of December, India is aiming to surpass the 100 crore mark by vaccinating more than 100 crore people.

The COVID-19 vaccination drive started in a phased manner, vaccinating senior citizens in the first phase, people above 45 years old in the second phase and people between 18 to 44 years old in the third phase.

In addition, India is expected to soon roll out the vaccination drive for children between 12 to 18 years old. The World Health Organisation (WHO) is expected to examine the two India made vaccines, which are conducting trials for children, following which there would be a vaccine against the Wuhan virus for children too.

Meanwhile, highlighting the state wise data, Uttar Pradesh administered the most (cumulative) vaccine doses at 12.01 crore, followed by Maharashtra at 9.21 crore and Gujarat at 6.72 crore, West Bengal 6.70 crore, Madhya Pradesh 6.60 crore and Bihar 6.20 crore.

States which have administered above 5 crore people are : Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Rajasthan.

As of now, more than 1 crore India made COVID-19 vaccines, the Bharat Biotech International Private Limited’s COVAXIN and the Serum Institute of India (SII) manufactured Covisheild are available in India. The two made in India vaccines are in the pipeline, which would be sent to Indian states and union territories (UTs,) to vaccinate the citizens of India.
