After reporting 90,000 cases of the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19,) India on the 7th of January, Friday, India crossed the 1 lakh single day cases mark.

On Friday, India reported a massive surge in the COVID-19 cases with 1,17,100 new cases, in the past 24 hours. The total new cases are 30% higher than yesterday’s 90,000 cases of the deadly virus. The daily jump reached 1 lakh from 10,000 in just 8 days, after a span of 7 months. Last time India reported 1 lakh single day cases was in May 2021, during the second wave of COVID-19.

In addition, the nation reported only 30,836 recoveries and 302 fatalities in the past 24 hours. The cases were confirmed after conducting 15,13,377 sample tests, confirmed by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR.) With this, the nation conducted a total of 68 crore (68,68,19,128) tests.

The country’s total death toll reached 4,83,178, total active cases and recoveries in India stand at 3,71,363 and 3,43,71,845 respectively. Facts and figures of COVID-19 data were confirmed by the Union Health Ministry and updated data is available on the official website of the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW.) India also reported COVID-19 recovery rate at 97.81%. The situation of COVID-19, along with Omicron, is worsening in India, with at least 26 states affected. Of the total affected states, Maharashtra, West Bengal and Union Territory Delhi are the worst regions, affected by COVID-19 as well as Omicron. In addition, there are 3,007 Omicron cases in India with the majority in Maharashtra, Delhi, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Gujarat and Telangana.

Meanwhile, India has administered more than 148 crores COVID-19 vaccine doses so far.
