The Delhi High Court (HC) issued a summons notice to yoga guru Baba Ramdev.  The issued summons was on the plea of the Delhi Medical Association (DMA) over false information about Patanjali’s Coronil kit.

In June 2020, Baba Ramdev’s company Patanjali launched a Coronil Kit, an Ayurvedic cure for the deadly Coronavirus infection.  Since the launch, the Ayurvedic medicine of Patanjali made headlines, raising controversy.  While Patanjali claimed the Coronil Kit worth Rs. 545 to be a 100 % cure for the Wuhan virus (COVID-19) infection, the Uttarakhand Government questioned its credibility and said it to be false information.

The reason to file a petition was to prevent the spread of false information regarding the Coronil Kit, which claimed to be a treatment for the Wuhan virus also known as the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19.)   The petition also pointed out the recent issue between the Allopathy doctors and Baba Ramdev.

The DMA highlighted the recent comments and statements of Baba Ramdev, which questioned the authenticity and efficiency of Allopathy medicines, damaging the reputation of doctors and science.

According to sources, Advocate Rajiv Dutta, the lawyer representing the Association, has sought the High Court to protect the fundamental rights of doctors.

However, the Delhi HC expressed disappointment over the filed petition and said, the statements made by Baba Ramdev are his personal opinion.  The Court said, “I don’t think your allopathic profession is so fragile..Someone has a view that it is because of the inefficacy of allopathic medicines that so many people have died.”

The single bench judge of Justice C. Hari Shankar said, “If I feel some science is fake.. tomorrow I feel homeopathy is fake.. do you mean they will file a suit against me?.. It is public opinion.. Ramdev is a person..he doesn’t have faith in allopathy.  He believes everything can be cured by Yoga and Ayurveda. He may be right or wrong (sic.)”

The HC also insisted on filing a Public Interest  Litigation (PIL) instead of petition.

However, the Court issued a summons and said, a decision would be taken after hearing Baba Ramdev.  With this the court adjourned the hearing.  As of now, the Court asked the counsel for Baba Ramdev to tell him not to make any provocative statement.  The next hearing regarding the DMA petition and matter is scheduled on the 13th of July.

This is not the first time Baba Ramdev has been criticised and charged for his actions.  Recently, the Indian Medical Association also filed a defamation case against Baba Ramdev and asked him not to spread false information about Allopathic science.
