Amid Omicron (a new variant of the Wuhan virus) threat, Indian citizens got a major relief, as the Central Government announced vaccination for children.

The COVID-19 vaccination for children between 15 years old to 18 years old, would roll out from the 3rd of January, 2022.  In addition, the Government of India also announced booster shots for senior citizens and front line workers from the 10th of January.  The booster shot, also known as the precaution shot, would be given to prevent the spread of the new COVID-19 variant, Omicron.

With the allowance of booster shot, India would be the 5th country to allow booster shot as a precaution against the Omicron threat.  The decision to begin vaccination drives for children and booster shots for senior citizens with comorbidities and other health issues were taken in consultation with medical experts.  However, a decision on vaccinating children between 12 years old to 15 years old are yet to be taken, but emergency use authorisation (EUA) has been given to the Bharat Biotech’s manufactured COVAXIN. The Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) gave approval to use COVAXIN as emergency use on Children (12 years to 17 years old.)  Besides COVAXIN, Zydus Cadila’s ZyCoV-D has been given EUA.

After the detailed discussion, the Prime Minister of India, Mr. Narendra Modi made the announcement in an address to the nation.
