Mr. Kodali Nani, the Civil Supplies Minister of Andhra Pradesh and a Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) leader clarified the recent ration dealer’s protest.

On the 27th of October, Tuesday, Mr. Kodali Nani said, despite the ration dealer’s protest, the State Government would not stop ration distribution. He said, from the 1st of November, the YSRCP Government would conduct a door to door ration distribution scheme as usual. He said, “In the past, the situation of ration shops was different. Govt relied directly upon the ration shops. But now, (sic,) if Ration shops get closed, we will set them aside and distribute them directly to the people through the Civil Supplies Department.” He further said, “Ration shop dealers need to change their attitude.”

It is to be noted, from the 26th of October, ration shops in Andhra Pradesh, started a protest against the ruling YSRCP Government. The fair pricing ration shops stopped distributing supplies to white ration card holders in the State. The protest which started on Tuesday, continued the next day, the 27th of October.

The reason behind the protest called by the Andhra Pradesh Ration Dealers’ Association is ‘anti-dealer policies of the State Government. According to Mandadi Venkat Rao, the President of the Ration Dealer’s Association (RDA,) the dealers were not paid the dues for many months. They were not in a position to meet the day to day expenses and maintain their shops. Their income had come down from Rs. 15,000 to Rs. 10,000 per month.

Other demands of the association are:

Payment of Rs. 16 crore as commission as part of the Prime Minister’s Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY) programme from March 29, 2020.

Implementation of cash back from demand draft and immediate payment of arrears of pulses diverted from dealers to the Integrated Child Development Scheme (ICDS.)

The return of empty sacks, in violation of a 2008 GO, which was in effect during the tenure of late Mr. Y.S. Rajasjekhara Reddy, the Chief Minister of combined Andhra Pradesh (when Telangana was in A.P.) Ration shop dealers were allowed to sell the gunny bags since the tenure of combined Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister late Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy. The State government, however, under the pretext of shortage of gunny, was not allowing the dealers to sell the gunny bags.

Until the Andhra Pradesh Government agrees to the demands of the Dealer’s Addiction, they would not call off the protest.
