The Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) Government would soon have a majority of Members of the Legislative Council (MLC.)

With the term of seven MLCs of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) coming to an end and four YSRCP MLCs joining the Legislative Council, the equation would change. With the retirement of 7 MLCs, TDP would be left with 15 MLCs from the previous 22 MLCs. On the other hand, the count of the YSRCP MLCs would increase from 17 to 21 .

The TDP’s MLCs in the House like Buddha Venkanna, Y.V. B. Rajendra Prasad and M.A. Shariff are among others who retired on the 18th of June. In addition, the TDP’s M.A. Shariff and R. Subrahmanyam, both chairman and vice chairman respectively, of the House, retired today.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Andhra Pradesh President Somu Veerraju also retired from the Upper House, leaving another post vacant.

With this YSRCP members Appi Reddy from Guntur district, R.V. Rameshkumar from Kadapa district, Moshenraju from West Godavari district and Thota Trimurthulu from East Godavari district would enter the council as the new MLCs.

The YSRCP members were elected through the Governor’s quota. The ruling YSRCP Government nominated 4 candidates for the MLC posts, which was approved by Biswa Bhushan Harichandan, the Governor of Andhra Pradesh.

The remaining vacant MLC posts would soon be filled by the YSRCP members.

With the majority of MLCs in the A.P., Legislative Council, the YSRCP Government is likely to withdraw the resolution sent to the Union Home Ministry in January 2020, seeking abolition of the Legislative Council.
