Devineni Uma Maheswara Rao, a member of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP,) was arrested on the 19th of December.

Uma Maheswara Rao was protesting against the decision of the Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) to assign 3 State capitals.  He was arrested from the Vijayawada Gollapudi Center, where he was protesting with his supporters.

The Vijayawada Police reached the spot and arrested Mr. Rao and took him to the Bhavanipuram Police Station in Vijayawada.

Though a few TDP activists blocked the Police’s jeep and started shouting slogans against them and the A.P., Government, the Police took Devineni Uma Maheshwara Rao into custody.

Meanwhile, the villagers and farmers of Amaravati also called for a protest against the proposal of having 3 State capitals.  The farmers who gave their lands for the development of Amaravati as the State’s capital city are hurt and disappointed with the decision of the YSRCP Government.

As per the orders of the A.P., Government, the Police imposed Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) and Section 34 of the Police Act in as many as 29 villages of Amaravati.

On the 17th of December, the Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, the Chief Minister of A.P., announced Andhra Pradesh may have 3 capitals.

While the legislative capital is expected to be Amaravati, the executive capital is likely to be Visakhapatnam and Kurnool would be the judiciary capital.  Jagan Mohan Reddy said if the Government establishes Visakhapatnam as the legislative capital, they would not have to spend money on infrastructure as Visakhapatnam is already developed.

However, an official announcement about Andhra Pradesh having 3 capitals would be announced in 2 weeks, after the matter is discussed.

Stay tuned for further updates.
