Andhra Pradesh (AP) got its first woman Chief Secretary (CS,) Nilam Sawhney, an Indian Administration Service (IAS) officer.

The General Administration Department, on the evening of the 13th of November, issued a notification regarding Nilam Sawhney’s appointment.

Nilam Sawhney, a cadre of the 1984 batch, served as the Secretary of the Central Vigilance Commission before joining as the Chief Secretary of AP.

Ms. Sawhney replaced L.V. Subrahmanyam as the Chief Secretary of Andhra Pradesh.  After L.V. Subrahmanyam was relieved of his duties on the 4th of November, Neerabh Kumar Prasad, the Chief Commissioner of Land Administration, was given the additional charges of the CS of AP.

The reason behind Subrahmanyam’s exit was an issue between Subrahmanyam and Praveen Prakash, the Principal Secretary to Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, the Chief Minister of AP.  According to sources, Subrahmanyam served a show cause notice to Praveen Prakash for his misconduct, due to which the State Government replaced Subrahmanyam. As of now, Subrahmanyam is appointed as the Director General of Human Resources Development Institute.

Ms. Sawhney’s appointment was approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet of AP Government.

Nilam Sawhney is soon expected to take over as the Chief Secretary of Andhra Pradesh.
