The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an alert regarding Cyclone forming over Bay of Bengal.

As per sources, named as ‘Mocha,’ the cyclone is expected to form over the Bay of Bengal, by the evening of the 6th of May, bringing thunderstorms and heavy rainfall in nearby Odisha, West Bengal.  Besides north eastern states, the cyclone is likely to intensify and enter Kerala, bringing thunderstorms and rainfall in states like Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

The IMD officials said, “Thereafter, it is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm while moving nearly northwards towards central Bay of Bengal.  The cyclonic storm may take shape around May 9.”

In addition, even if the IMD has not released any specific guidelines for Odisha, the State Government has already started preparing for the worst case flood like scenarios.  The Odisha Government has already put collectors of 18 coastal and adjoining districts and officials of 11 departments on alert.  Furthermore, all cyclone prone districts are kept in a state of readiness, along with the district administrations along with the National Defence Rescue Force (NDRF,) Odisha Defence Reserve Force (ODRAF) and others,  which are on standby for any possible eventuality.

Concerned with the cyclone, the IMD has issued a rain alert from the 7th of May to the 10th of May, across India.
