Mr. Devulapalli Subbaraya Shastri, a noted cartoonist from Andhra Pradesh, passed away on the night of the 27th of January, Thursday.

According to sources, Mr. Devulapalli Subbaraya, the son of Devulapalli Krishna Shastri, was 91 year old.  He took his last breath at his residence in Chennai, after suffering from prolonged age related issues. 

A native of Pithapuram region, East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh, Mr. Devulapalli Subbaraya Shastri learned drawing techniques from Adavi Bapiraju, Mokkapati, Pilaka, Gokhle.  Highlighting his achievements, Mr. Devulapalli Subbaraya Shastri gained popularity through his cartoons in the name of Bujjai and used to work for Andra Patrika, Andhra Prabha, Andhra Jyothi weekly’s.  Later, he also was known for his cartoon Dumbu, which gained millions of hearts in Andhra Pradesh.  He was one of the first cartoonists of India to create comics and was known as the Father of Indian Comics.  He is also the creator of “Panchatantra“.

In 1992, Mr. Devulapalli Subbaraya Shastri also won “Bala Bandu” award, given by the then Andhra Pradesh Government.

The last rites of Devulapalli Subbaraya Shastri is expected to be held today, the 28th of January.
