The Andhra Pradesh (A.P.,) Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, on the 25th of March, inaugurated the awaited Orvakal Airport in Kurnool district of A.P.

The Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) Government constructed the airport at a cost of Rs. 153 crores. The airport is spread over 1,008 acres of land with a 2000 m runway.

During the inauguration ceremony, P. Hardeep Singh, the Civil Aviation Minister of India participated as the Chief Guest. The event began with the national flag hoisting, followed by unveiling the statue of the late Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, the former CM of A.P.

After the inauguration, Mr. Jagan Mohan Reddy, addressed the media and said flights from the airport would start from the 28th of March. IndiGo would be the first flight which would take off from Orvakal Airport to Bengaluru. Initially, flights would be available to Bengaluru, Chennai and Visakhapatnam only.

The Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on the 15th of January issued the license for beginning the flight service. In addition, security clearance was given by the Bureau of Civil Aviation (BCA,) on the 27th of January.

Named as Uyyalawada Narasimha Reddy Airport, this is the 6th airport constructed in Andhra Pradesh.
