Andhra Pradesh domestic electricity bills are no less than a shock to the domestic consumers. The residents of Andhra Pradesh witnessed an electricity bill of Rs. 5,000 to 10,000 for the month of March and April.

Individuals who used to get a monthly bill of Rs. 300 to 400 is now getting an average of Rs. 5,000.

The reason for high bills is due to the recently changed new tariff for the retail sale of electricity to domestic consumption.  The new retail tariff came into effect from the fiscal year 2020-2021, amid the pandemic crisis.

Officials working in the electricity department, who wished to be anonymous said the new tariff has a greater impact on even small unit electricity consumers in the State.

According to the new changed tariff, domestic consumers are suffering with an increased amount of bills.  Previously, in 2019-2020, tariff allowed the small consumers up to 300 units in the Group A, but now Group A slab of electricity consumers are allowed 75 units with a pay of Rs 1.45 per unit up to 50 units and Rs 2.60 per unit between 51 to 75 units.   In any case, the electricity cosumption goes beyond 75 allowed unit, the consumers comes in Category B.

The second slab, the consumer would be charged Rs. 2.60 per unit from 0-100 units, Rs 3.60 per unit from 101-200 units.  Whereas, Category C, the amount per unit increased even higher.

J. Padma Janardhan Reddy, the Chairman and Managing Director of the Central Power Distribution Corporation explained the increased bill amount.

Ms. Padma said, due to the lockdown, people are mostly indoors, increasing the consumption of electricity like fans, Television, AC and other appliances.

In addition, the electricity department is generating bills of two months, which looks an increased amount to the consumers.
