On the 11th of November, citizens of Amaravati, including women, farmers and other people carried out the Amaravati Maha Padayatra. The padayatra is being carried out by the citizens to protest against the Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) Government, demanding to revoke the decision of having three State capitals, instead of Amaravati only.

Joined by the people of Amaravati, the Amaravati Maha Padayatra was organised by the Amaravati Conservation Committee and the Capital United Action Committee. Starting from today, the 11th of November, the padayatra would continue till 45 days. During the Maha Padayatra, protesters would cover 70 major villages in Guntur, Prakasam, Nellore, and Chittoor districts. The final destination of the Maha Padayatra is Tirupati, where the protesters would reach on the 15th of December. The padayatra started in Naguluppalapadu of Prakasam district against the ruling government. Despite heavy rainfall, the protest was launched. Farmers, women and other people of Amaravati were seen wearing raincoats and carrying umbrellas and walking amid police restrictions.

To control the situation, the Andhra Pradesh Police deployed police officials on every check posts of the districts of A.P. In addition, the police also placed under house arrest the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) and leaders, who extended support to farmers and people of Amaravati.

As of now, TDP MLAs Mr. Gottipati Ravi Kumar and Mr. Alluri Sambasiva Rao are under house arrest.

The Amaravati capital issue is a problem for the farmers of 28 villages who sacrificed their lands. In 2014, after Andhra Pradesh and Telangana emerged as two independent states, villagers and farmers of Amaravati gave their lands to the then ruling Government, the Telugu Desam Party (TDP,) for the development of Amaravati as the Andhra Pradesh Capital.

However, in December 2019, the Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP,) the government now in power, proposed three capitals (Visakhapatnam, Amaravati and Kurnool) for Andhra Pradesh.
