The Indian Medical Association (IMA) declared the 14th of June as the All India Protest Day and expressed solidarity with the doctors who are on strike in West Bengal.
Doctors across the Country will protest and support their fellow doctors in Kolkata against the assault which took place on the 10th of June.
In Kolkata, from the 11th of June, junior doctors of the Nil Ratan Sircar (NRS) Medical College and Hospital are protesting against a deadly assault on a few junior doctors of the Hospital.
On the 10th of June, the family members of an octogenarian patient who passed away, assaulted two junior doctors, Mukherjee and Tekhwani, of the NRS Medical College and Hospital.
According to the family of the patient, he passed away due to the doctors’ negligence in treatment. This caused the family to attack the doctors.
A truck loaded with approximately 200 goons came to the NRS Medical College and Hospital and assaulted the doctors.
After the brutal assault, Mukherjee was left with a fractured skull and is in coma, whereas Tekhwani is in critical condition and is in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU.)
On the 13th of June, Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister of West Bengal, visited the NRS Hospital and warned the doctors to get back to work by 2:00 P.M., or the Government would take strict action against them.
A delegation of doctors protesting against the assault met K.N. Tripathi, the Governor of West Bengal and presented their demands. They said, “We will continue with our agitation till our demands are fulfilled. Our demands are simple, proper security with armed policemen at all hospitals, arrest of culprits involved in the NRS attack on Saturday under non-bailable sections.”
In support of the Bengal doctors, a team of junior doctors each in Delhi, Punjab, Maharashtra, Mumbai, Patna, Raipur and Rajasthan also joined the protest.
Although patients are suffering due to the nationwide protests, the doctors are not ready to give up until their demands are fulfilled.
Ms. Banerjee said, the protests are a conspiracy by the opposition party, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP.) She also deemed the issue to be a political one.
The All India Protest Day started at 8:00 A.M., and will continue till 5:00 P.M., on the 14th of June.
